A new chapter: Oato is now in Booths and Waitrose nationwide

For those who can't access our milk rounds, or simply want to pick up some Oato on their weekly shop, we have launched our Barista Whole into both Booths and Waitrose supermarkets. It's the exact same classic recipe as it always has been, just in a new 1 litre format!

More on our new poly bottles

We love glass, and we are just as committed to our reusable pint bottles as ever – so why the switch to poly (HDPE) for supermarkets?

Well, we thought long and hard about this when researching the best way to bottle Oato for situations where the bottle will not be sent back for refills. Glass, while the best environmental option around when it can be reused (an average of 28 times from our milk rounds), sadly falls to the bottom of the pile when it is used only once, even if the glass is then recycled. The primary reasons for this are the high energy costs to create glass compared to other bottling solutions, and the freight weight when sending it.

We looked into other options, like the multi-layer cartons that you see many other milk alternatives in, but poly bottles, like the ones you get dairy milk in, can be kerbside recycled across the UK, and are not shipped off to other countries for processing as cartons often are (the UK has virtually no infrastructure that can separate the layers and recycle the cartons). Even though the milk bottle is plastic, it is a comparatively environmentally sustainable packaging item, with around 90% of all the items produced being recycled and also made from recycled HDPE, making it the most circular option for non-reusable instances.

Does this make poly bottles the ideal solution? No, there is unfortunately no 'ideal' whilst packaging from British shops is not yet returnable and refillable. It is however, in our opinion, the best option that we have at the moment, and having Oato in supermarkets means enjoying a fresh milk alternative is a much more accessible option for many across the country.

And of course, you can always continue to order our reusable glass bottles from your local milk round!
